As the successor to the BMW 2800, BMW introduced the E3 3.0 S in April 1971. Thanks to the increased displacement, the power increased to 180 hp and the torque was sovereign 260 Nm at 3700 rpm. Parallel to the technology, the exterior of the E3 was revised. In the front, the two outer radiator grilles were now black, and behind there were more compact and stylistically smoothed lighting units.
